Teaching
Early days
I started tutoring in Primary School, when my teacher ('maestra') asked me to help a student who was having difficulty keeping the pace. I was probably a good candidate, as they tell me that I used to complain about how slowly we were taught new material.
The real thing
I had my first professional experience in tutoring when, at the end of High School and during the first years at university, I gave private tuition in Physics and Mathematics to many students. They had not successfully completed the regular year and needed support to take a 'rescue' exam in early September, in order to be admitted to the following year.
Assisting in a class
During my PhD I had my first experience of teaching to a class. My supervisor asked me to help in the tutorials of a Mathematics class he was teaching. Another lecturer asked me to help in the running of an undergraduate laboratory (stuents' guidance, supervision and report marking). Teaching to a class is vastly different from private tuition as it's not as easy to get feedback.
My own courses!
Upon completion of my PhD I moved to Thailand where I was employed as a lecturer, soon to be promoted to Assistant Professor, at the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology - Thammasat University (SIIT-TU). In SIIT I was finally responsible for the whole course: detailed programme, teaching, exam preparation and marking. In the last year I've used the internet to make homework and other material easily available to my students. My personal site at SIITis still available.
